Historical Liquid Bluing for Laundry 18th century

Instructions:
Shake contents well. 2 tablespoons may be added to 2 gallons of wash water, rinse water, or starch water. We recommend using it in rinse water if not starching and if starching using it in your starch water. Once incorporated into the water, lay clothing in- only for a few seconds any longer and you have a chance for bits of blueing to settle in the fabric ( this will come out in the next wash). Pull out and let dry. Iron if needed.

During the eighteenth century and much into the nineteenth century Smalt was the go to product for bluing. However, Smalt carries toxicity from the cobalt in which it derives its color. Prussian Blue began to experience more common use in the mid eighteenth century for dyestuffs and by the early 1800’s became a household ingredient appearing in numerous recipes. Though this Prussian Blue recipe is from 1884, we recommend this product as a great nontoxic, alternative to Smalt/powder blue.

100% Pearl Powder est. 1826

Documented as early as the 19th century, pearl powder was “Only for the Curious and the Rich” as one 1826 recipe stated. While the century progressed away from face paint, more commonly seen as “the old regime” of cosmetics, pearl powder made shimmering waves with it’s luxurious sheen one can only obtain naturally from the classic elegance of pearls.

Pearl Powder benefits those who are acne prone or who have sensitive skin. By minimizing large pores and increasing elasticity of the skin, it is ideal for aging skin and most skin complexions.

Rose Cold Cream est. 1901

In 1901 natural beauty instead of heavy make-up was all the rage! Healthy and smooth skin with a porcelain glow and pink healthy cheeks- that is what women were after. White skin was en vogue so women protected their skin from the sun. This isn’t to say women didn’t wear any makeup. The popular cosmetics were found in natural colors, nudes, and soft shades with a lot of skin care products like cold cream.

While cosmetics took the back burner in this time period, Skin care was held above everything. Women would use cold creams on a daily basis for cleaning, moisturizing, softening the skin, and preventing chapping. Rose was one of the most favored cold creams because the Rose water works as a natural cleanser, toner, and has a wonderful light scent.

* This cold cream doesn’t have any modern emulsifying ingredients to keep things from separating. This is one reason historical creams were sold in small jars. If it separates It’s still completely usable, just stir it up.

Rose Water est. 1800

Rose water appears in recipe books from before the 18th century to after the 20th century. It is a timeless fragrance with many uses such as skin-enhancing benefits and acts as an anti-inflammatory. It also helps sooth irritated skin. It is said that Rose Water can help strengthen skin cells and regenerate skin tissue. Those with dry skin sometimes use rose water as a moisturizer. This lovely perfumed water and its healing, rejuvenating effects make rose water a potentially valuable addition to your skin care regiment. Rose water was the primary fragrance used during the 1800-1900’s.
