Many of the historical recipes from the 18th century through the 19th Century are the same for making Orange Flower water. In the 19th Century women tented towards very flowery scents and Orange Flower Water was one that still could be purchased and worn by either sex.

Florida Water est. 1865 $15.99 SOLD OUT

Given the label, ” The Universal Perfume”, the name refers to the Fountain of Youth said to be located in Florida.

Florida Water is a perfumed spirit which became popular in 19th Century North America. They say it was what lavender and Eau-de-cologune was to Europe. Although both the Germans and English had their own brand-name of Florida Water, it was more popular in America. Once you try it you will be hooked.

The label is based off of original labels from 1865.

The first Florida water known in the US dates to the early 1800’s. It was well known before 1830. By 1830 it was already available in most Perfumery, Druggist and Pharmaceutical houses in America which usually produced their own. This means that Florida Water’s recipe varied somewhat. It was only in the late 19th century that the bottles were standardized for all Florida Water. Previously to that Bottle designs also varied which is why it is hard for researchers to pinpoint the exact date of Florida Water’s beginnings.

Historical Excerpts:
1. In 1840 Eliza Leslie directed her readers: “On the Toilet table keep always your dressing-case, your bottles of Cologne, Florida Water, etc.. and a large pincushion.”
2. In 1864 the circular of a Philadelphia drug and chemical wholesaler included Florida Water in an assortment of sizes listed under, ” Lists of Drugs and Medicines which should be Purchased by a Country Store keeper.”

Florida Water was used by both men and women as a toilet requisite. it was used as a cordial and stimulant, as well as a breath freshener, Cologne, body spray, bath water, perfume for the body and handkerchief, sick room refresher and much more. Victorian etiquette manuals warned young ladies against the “offensive” impression made by a strong perfume, but Florida Water and Eau de Cologne were recommended as appropriate for all, along with sachets for scenting the linen and fresh flowers in the corsage. Large quantities were also used by barbershops as cologne and aftershave. In the 1880s and 1890s Murray & Lanman Florida Water was advertised as “The Richest of all Perfumes” and “The most Popular Perfume in the World”.

Violet Water est. 1893 $20.99

Violets can help relieve pain. It is an analgesic, expectorant and a decongestant, which makes it particularly helpful for any types of aches and pains. The smell of violets have been revered for centuries, but the flower itself can’t give off enough oil and when it does the smell doesn’t last long. Therefore, for centuries, oil has been extracted from the leaves and flowers but in addition, other violet smelling ingredients have been used like Orris Root. It is said that true violet oil does not exist. And the violet/leaf oil does not carry the true violet smell. They both have different scents. The flower possesses a sweet powdery, woody-floral scent which is due to ionones in the flower. These ionones were first separated from Parma violets by Tiemann and Kruger in 1893. The discovery of ionones triggered the successful production of synthetic violet notes identical in scent. This means that before 1893 – using the oil produced by the flowers and leaves, one was not able to obtain the exact violet flower scent. After 1893 Violet waters, perfume, cosmetics, and toiletry products became very popular with the introduction of synthetic violet. Our violet water is post 1893. We bring you the true scent of Violets just like the 20th century women loved.

Use this for perfume, bath water, linens, room freshener, and so much more!

Ladies Face Toner est. 1778 $15.99

Rose Cold Cream est. 1901 $23.99

In 1901 natural beauty instead of heavy make-up was all the rage! Healthy and smooth skin with a porcelain glow and pink healthy cheeks- that is what women were after. White skin was en vogue so women protected their skin from the sun. This isn’t to say women didn’t wear any makeup. The popular cosmetics were found in natural colors, nudes, and soft shades with a lot of skin care products like cold cream.

While cosmetics took the back burner in this time period, Skin care was held above everything. Women would use cold creams on a daily basis for cleaning, moisturizing, softening the skin, and preventing chapping. Rose was one of the most favored cold creams because the Rose water works as a natural cleanser, toner, and has a wonderful light scent.

* This cold cream doesn’t have any modern emulsifying ingredients to keep things from separating. This is one reason historical creams were sold in small jars. If it separates It’s still completely usable, just stir it up.
